How To Write A College Admission Essay

How To Write A College Admission Essay Just how many readers digest your words can vary as well. Still, don’t waste the opportunity to put another dimension on your application file. Usually one to two admissions officers read an essay. Some colleges will choose only to look at your GPA, Course Rigor and SAT/ACT scores. If you GPA and Test Scores are high enough, they may not feel that and essay is necessary. You could open with an anecdote or an interesting story that will show some of the best parts of your personality and character, offering an insight that will help the admission officers get to know who you are. A college application essay is usually around 500 words, and those words can mean the difference between acceptance and rejection. You will spend many days researching and crafting your essay, but admissions officers will only have a few minutes to actually read it, so you need to get their attention. While this is a great exercise, many students allow themselves to be influenced too much by the examples, and use lots of clichés in their desire to impress the admission officers. The admissions officers will only spend a brief amount of time reviewing your essay, so you need to start with a vivid paragraph that will keep them engaged. The introduction has to reveal to the reader what your essay is about and catch their attention. Whether you’re prepared or not, there comes a time when every student is faced with writing their first college essay. Even if you’re a natural writer, writing a college essay is still a daunting task. Here’s a method for tackling the process and a few examples to inspire you. Some campuses have a pool of reviewers, while others are more specific. Spend some time figuring out how the essay question relates to your personal qualities and then write from a specific angle. While you research your application essay, you will be encouraged to check out some examples of great essays and get inspired. Work with your students to help them with this important piece of their application. A college application essay is basically a glimpse into how your mind works and how you view the world. If you want your essay to be credible, you need to make sure everything you write supports that viewpoint. The student must convey why they want to attend and what makes them suitable for admission. It is important for them to sell themselves not just by listing their qualifications and grades, but by passionately sharing their long-term goals, and efforts so far to achieve them. Your students’ college essay is their opportunity to reveal their best qualities and to show an admission committee what makes them stand out from other applicants. At almost all selective colleges however, every college essay will be read by multiple people. If a student is on the fence, not an early admit or deny, essays will probably be read multiple times by multiple people while an applicant is being discussed. You can be certain that you did not spend all that time crafting the perfect essay in vain. How much weight a college puts on that portion of the application may differ. The role of the essay varies greatly from school to school. A lot of it depends upon the selectivity of the school. It is always worth an applicant’s while to write as strong an essay as possible, but its role in the process is a variable one. The second type of admission letter is sent by students to prospective universities or colleges, such as nursing school or graduate school. For a small college, there is a chance that you essay will only be read by a couple of individuals, but for a larger school it can make its way through several hands before being put down. While essays don’t weigh as much as grades or course selection, if you are applying test-optional or to a smaller school, more attention will be given to this section of the application. You’ve completed all the application forms, taken all the tests, and now it’s finally time to impress your university’s admission officers with a great college application essay. Scrap it, the decision is huge, as is the cost of tuition and tutoring you will need to write the admissions essay. Fortunately, you can forgo tutoring altogether and use our help instead.

How To Write A Private High School Application Essay Worth Reading

How To Write A Private High School Application Essay Worth Reading They are surrounded by different cultures and experiences. I don’t necessarily have to find validity in everyone’s viewpoints to at least listen to their reasoning. Patience, collaboration, and determination are all needed when climbing a wall, like in any field of research. I no longer say I can’t do something, instead approaching challenges with the utmost confidence. If one plan falls short, I reassess and approach the wall from another angle. I adore the end of a cross country race when all the girls from different schools hug and laugh with one another. I cherish being on a soccer team, where the bond between my teammates and me is essential for achieving success. Little by little, American culture poured into my life, intermingling with my Guatemalan roots. The more I remain nonjudgmental, the more my own beliefs develop and become nuanced. I extract small pieces of their perspectives in order to enhance my own. If I completely disagree with their opinions, I use their counterargument to articulate a more potent version of my position. I get lost in the walls and climb for hours, as time becomes irrelevant. I think of nothing else but reaching the last hold and forget all of my worries. Even when my friends beg to go home from fatigue, I insist on attempting another route. I don’t feel I’ve had a sufficient climbing session until my forearms are pulsing and the skin on my fingertips are raw. At first, I was an impatient climber who would try and solve the wall before me, making split-second decisions. The value in telling my story is just as important as hearing another. I love group projects in school, where ideas and creativity flow between people. Sometimes, pure adrenaline rushes through my body, making me want to bang my hands on the table out of complete anger towards an opinion. I have learned, though, that suppressing my emotional side during a time of disagreement and instead responding with calmness gets my point across more effectively. When that irritation begins to overtake my ability to concentrate on another person’s outlook, I always try to draw from my experiences of living both in the South and in the West. Appreciating uniqueness and connecting to different characters augments my own maturity and depth. Despite our differences, Emily and I have a healthy relationship in which we are able to learn from one another; the acknowledgement of our individual value allows us to avoid bitterness. I strive to continue improving my ability to be comfortable with disagreement in order to learn more from my peers. I may not always send up agreeing with Emily, or other people I care about, but I should at least try to understand a different perspective. Only then can I create a bridge that connects two different ideas, allowing for a more harmonious world. So, I try to listen with an open mind, even when that feels extremely difficult. However, this strategy rapidly tired me out after beginning to climb. Clearly, this method wasn’t going to get the job done; I had to change my mindset. Now, when I approach a wall, I first draw the problem out in my mind, using my hands to examine the holds. Like a game of chess, I lay out an intricate plan of attack. If I am completely perplexed by a wall, I converse with other pro climbers to guide me towards the best route. I am comfortable making decisions, even when I don’t know what the outcome may be. Through this life-changing sport I have strengthened not only my body but also my mind, learning the beauty of problem solving. The best things about climbing is that there is no clear-cut way to climb a wall, and that there is always a new challenge. My climbing partners say that I take the most unorthodox routes when climbing, but ironically they’re the most natural and comfortable paths for me. Every time I interact with climbers better than myself, I learn a new technique and create new bonds. Being part of the rock climbing community has helped me develop my social skills. I don’t have an answer to what exactly it is I want to do for the rest of my life. I love English and political science, but I have yet to find such an all-encompassing response as potatoes. What I’ve realized though, is that I don’t have to sacrifice all for one.

How To Write An Essay About Yourself

How To Write An Essay About Yourself Once you have written your college application essay, your job isn’t done â€" you need to keep working on it to improve it until you can improve it no further. If you were given a prompt by a certain school, make sure that your essay actually addresses the prompt. Even if you don’t have anyone else who can read your essay, you can review it yourself â€" just take a day or two off after writing it before you read it back so you can view it with fresh eyes. A strong personal statement or college application essay is the key to getting into your school of choice. A good personal statement is well organized, but also interesting, making the reader want to learn more about you. The following is a sample essay written for one of Harvard College's essay prompts. We've overseen thousands of students get into their top choice schools, from state colleges to the Ivy League. This connection of past experience to current maturity and self-knowledge is a key element in all successful personal essays. Colleges are very much looking for mature, self-aware applicants. These are the qualities of successful college students, who will be able to navigate the independence college classes require and the responsibility and quasi-adulthood of college life. And that’s precisely why using Ultius’s professional writing services has helped so many young people around the country; we meticulously go over the grammar and organizational structure of every paper we write. If you’re applying to all the Ivies, the two weeks in December after early results come out is not enough time to effectively work on your regular decision application essays. This should be the first busy month for essay writing. The summer is the best time to get essay drafts done, and most students have this entire month off from school. If you can decide on which schools you’ll be applying to early, it’ll be easier to know how much work you have to finish before the Nov. 1st deadlines. The only thing holding applicants back from REALLY putting the pedal to the metal is the fact that many schools don’t release their updated essay prompts until August. Your top priority schools should be worked on first so that you have more time to work on/perfect them. If you have a long college list, you have a lot more work to do and you can easily fall victim to overconfidence. Procrastination + the unfounded belief that you’ll definitely get into Penn for Early Decision is a recipe for disaster. After outlining your topic and making it as personal as possible, next comes the actual writing. While we assume that if you’re reading this, you’ve written hundreds of papers and essays before, writing an admissions essay can pose different challenges. The essays, however, can too easily be the product of co-authorship, with no way to distinguish between the contributions of the student and the coach. PrepScholar Admissions is the world's best admissions consulting service. We combine world-class admissions counselors with our data-driven, proprietary admissions strategies. Wondering why exactly you should buy admissions essays online from Ultius? After having written tens of thousands of 100% plagiarism-free academic papers, we began completing admissions essays for students as well. These essays are no easy task; it is a common misconception that they can be written quickly without much insight into a person’s past accomplishments. You definitely want to prioritize the remainder of your applications here. You shouldn’t want to attend a college that would admit you for your value as a roommate. In other words, the essay section of the application virtually invites all sorts of covert assistance, and sometimes outright cheating. High school grades and test scores can be boosted by expensive tutors, but they ultimately reflect the students’ own effort. No matter how rich they areâ€"and barring parental chicaneryâ€"the kids have to submit their real grades and take their own tests. So if you buy an admissions essay from our great company, you can be rest assured that your final product will truly enhance the credibility of your application. Thus, crafting a good admissions essay is significantly different than a good research paper. Likewise buying a research paper is also different from buying an admissions essay.

The contents inside collectively represent everything about me in high school â€" they tell a story, one all about me. This is a college essay that worked for Cornell University. They give you enough information to get a sense of what the essay will be about, but not enough to really understand what is going on. These are the parts that make your essay come alive. The first paragraph is mostly summary â€" it tells the reader facts about who you are, things you’ve done, tendencies you have, etc. (e.g. I never saw myself as a cat person). Summaries can be useful for bridging the gap between in-scene moments, or reflecting back on an experience and what it meant to you. However, an essay consisting entirely of summary is going to be dry and boring to read. You'll see a similar structure in many of the essays. The author starts with a very detailed story of an event or description of a person or place. For more ‘how to’ tips about the process of essay writing, see “Writing the College Essay”. This challenge was so rewarding to me, while at the same time I had the most fun of my life, because I was able to live with people who shared the same kind of drive and passion as I did. They turn the dial, just as they have hundreds of times before, until a soft, metallic click echoes into my eardrum and triggers their unconscious stop. I exultantly thrust open my locker door, exposing its deepest bowels candidly to the wide halls of the high school.

Essay Tips

Essay Tips Every year, that same family gathers together in New York City to celebrate Christmas. While this wonderful kaleidoscope of cultures has caused me to be the ‘peacekeeper’ during meal arbitrations, it has fundamentally impacted my life. However, thinking on my own wasn’t enough; I needed more perspectives. Prior to attending Mountain School, my paradigm was substantially limited; opinions, prejudices, and ideas shaped by the testosterone-rich environment of Landon School. I was herded by result-oriented, fast-paced, technologically-reliant parameters towards psychology and neuroscience (the NIH, a mere 2.11 mile run from my school, is like a beacon on a hill). Hard-fought days of mixing cement and transporting supplies had paid off for the affectionate community we had immediately come to love. The Happiness Spreadsheet doesn’t only reflect my own thoughts and emotions; it is an illustration of the fulfillment I get from gifting happiness to others. Finally, I am a strong proponent of hands-on experience for learning what good food looks and tastes like, so cooking is one of my favorite ways to teach the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle. Our society has taught us that delicious food has to make us feel guilty, when that is simply not the case. I was taught that one’s paramount accomplishment should be specialization. I sit, cradled by the two largest branches of the Newton Pippin Tree, watching the ether. The Green Mountains of Vermont stretch out indefinitely, and from my elevated vantage point, I feel as though we are peers, motionless in solidarity. But a few months ago, I would have considered this an utter waste of time. See, I have been blessed to be a part of what my mother calls the “melting pot of Europe.” While I was born in England, my brothers were born in Denmark and New York. I have a Swedish sister-in-law, Italian Aunts, an English Uncle, Romanian cousins and an Italo-Danish immigrant father. The best feeling in the world is falling in love with a dish and then learning all the health benefits that it provides the body. My transformation began with my mom’s cancer diagnosis. My mom went on a 100% whole food plant-based diet. I fully embraced this new eating philosophy to show my support. Eager to figure out the whole “vegan” thing, the two of us started binge-watching health documentaries such as “What the Health” and “Forks Over Knives”. After dinner, we would all play Wii Sports together. I was the king of bowling, and Dawn was the queen of tennis. As my qualities as a “therapist” and a “tutor” shaped me into a great translator, I will continue to develop my future as a clinical pharmacist by enhancing and discovering my qualities. In one form or another, I've always been and will be a translator. A “14” etched on November 15, 2018, marked the first Lakeside Cooking on the Stove Club meeting. What had started as a farcical proposition of mine transformed into a playground where high school classmates and I convene every two weeks to prepare a savory afternoon snack for ourselves. A few months later, a “16” scribbled on February 27, 2019, marked the completion of a fence my Spanish class and I constructed for the dusty soccer field at a small Colombian village. I don’t remember a single time that they argued about the games.Afterward, we would gather in the living room and Danielle would play the piano while the rest of us sang hymns. It would be fair to say that this was all due to Shellie’s upbringing. My room was on the first floor, right in front of Shellie’s hair salon, a small business that she ran out of her home. I’ve spent most of my life as an anti-vegetable carboholic. For years, processed snack foods ruled the kitchen kingdom of my household and animal products outnumbered plant-based offerings. The Dirksen family had three kids. They were all different. Danielle liked bitter black coffee, Christian liked energy drinks, and Becca liked sweet lemon tea. Dawn, the host mom didn’t like winter, and Mark, the host dad, didn’t like summer. While translating has been a huge part of my life, a professional translator is not my dream job. I want to be an ambulatory care clinical pharmacist who manages the medication of patients with chronic diseases. In fact, translating is a huge part of the job of a clinical pharmacist. We read all the books by the featured doctors like “The China Study” and “How Not To Die”. I became entranced by the world of nutritional science and how certain foods could help prevent cancer or boost metabolism.

Writing Section

Writing Section Like the first item, this isn’t something that should take a lot of time. This is another step that can initially seem completely skippable, but organizing your writing can save you considerable stress and frustration. A good writing plan can streamline or even eliminate the need to do any significant rewrites. With so many other things in your schedule, this process can initially seem like a waste of time. However, it will save you a lot of time in the long run. My Christmas presents no longer had much of my time, and I struggled finding the coziest jacket for ice-cold temperatures. As Christmas time floated away, I began to cherish the moments. Taking a longitudinal approach to this essay will allow you to show the depth of your passion for medicine. Use your high school classes or extracurricular activities to reinforce your longstanding interest in attending medical school. You could then discuss how you learned about the social determinants of health in high school, and how that motivated you to consider medicine as a career, to serve marginalized populations. You took the most advanced science courses, joined the Health Careers Club, and shadowed a doctor who primarily served low-income immigrants. Through the Health Careers Club, you were able to organize free kidney disease screenings for vulnerable populations. “If you take out diversity candidates and student athletes, the difference between legacy and non-legacy students gets really scary,” Fayal said. Exhilaration filled my body with new year jitters and reminders that half a school year remained. Sadness marinated as winter break ended, and 3AM bedtimes became nonexistent. I walked through my home in fuzzy socks, hoping school would delay itself one more week! Your essay should also center around personal experiences rather than abstract musings or theoretical ideas given the prompt’s focus on aspirations, experiences, and relationships. Why This College” questions used by many universities. Your essay should provide compelling reasons for your decision to participate in this specific program and convey your commitment to attending medical school. Rice emphasizes a broad undergraduate education that includes liberal arts. Your essay should discuss the importance of humanities within medicine in addition to the hard science topics required by the typical pre-med track. If you later realize that you misread the prompt, you might need to start the writing process from scratch. The adversity you choose doesn’t have to have a “happy ending.” The story you tell can have any trajectory, and the adversities that didn’t end in success can still make for extremely insightful essays. The goal is to share how you respond in the face of a challenge, and what you learned from that specific experience. Struggling to connect with one of your math tutoring students for months, and finally discovering a more visual mode of learning that helps them succeed. I have also included a sample essay from this past application cycle to give you an example of what we consider a strong essay, and it is from “interesting or amusing story” prompt. Create a rough outline, including approximately how long each paragraph needs to be in order to complete the essay within the word count limits. Creating a schedule, even if you need to modify it later, gets your brain in motion. Look for one or two key aspects that you may be able to work into a title. That winter I walked around in my big, warm wool sweater complemented by my glistening shaved head. “There are 745 colleges with at least 1 application file on AdmitSee.com, and 286 colleges with 10+ application files on the site,” Fayal said. Do not discuss academic topics in this portion of your essay. Your application will leave you with plenty of opportunities to discuss your intellectual pursuits. Use this space to show how your individual skills and perspective will benefit the Rice community. An everyday activity conveyed in a unique manner can showcase your creativity and help you stand out among the competition. Our Urgent Admission Essay Writing Service Helps You In 2 Hours

Our Urgent Admission Essay Writing Service Helps You In 2 Hours I came across Pride and Prejudice at a cheap bookstore, it was all weathered and yellowed and had the dusty scent of a book that was well worn in. I judged the book by its pretty, lavender cover and just had to buy it. At first read, I was enamoured with Mr. Darcy, yearning for a love story as deep and profound as in the novel. Little, fifth grade me just hoped that maybe the next day in class the boy sitting next to me might profess that he loved me all along. When I finished Pride and Prejudice, I thought it would quickly be replaced by another book and my love for it left behind snug in the worn out pages of my copy. They were approachable, easy enough for a child to follow, and yet monumentally more vast, multifaceted, and meaningful than they appeared to me at the time. Even so, from a young age, I could tell a good book from a bad one. It wasn’t until my teenage years, however, that I could tell you what made these books good, or express what they meant in terms of almost anything but plot. I found more happy endings after that, not all too surprising but none had the same effect as Pride and Prejudice&mash;that feeling of a book leaving its fingerprint on you. The Book Thief offered my first insight into a world painted in shades of grey, my first introduction to what would become my quest for understandingâ€"of humanity, of the world around me, of myself. It inspired me as a learner and as a writer to explore and question and, above all, to define my own truth. I am drawn to St. John’s College because I know I will be among friendsâ€"the books that speak ten thousand more words than what is written on the page. I especially look forward to the different perspectives and the debates that will come from having an entire community bound together by the richness of the program. I want to learn and discover truths and find questions I didn’t know I had. He understands that the society needs artists like him. Mediocrity is appreciated since it does not question the status quo. Throughout my high school career we were stuck on these desks, asked to raise our hands to speak, told what was right from wrong, all around a very uninspiring environment. I had no idea how a classroom could be thought-provoking and truly educational until I went to the Summer Academy at St. John’s. In the seminars I felt an energy of pure passion, every single person shared this love for learning that I had neverexperienced before. Fingers fumbling over the smooth cover and crisp spine, I prepared myself for a new journey. It had a distinct new-book smell, fresh and crisp and full of promise. Inside the front cover was scribbled a name, illegible. The book, or so my dad told me, had been given to him as a gift from a patient, but he had never even opened it. Instead it had been reconciled to a life on the shelf, watching the world but not participating in it. The Book Thief, in exploring such a profound theme, stood in a stark contrast to the mechanical nature of the public education system through which I’ve journeyed. In my prior schooling, we were taught to accept only one truth as the absolute truth. It changed my perceptions of myself and of the world around me. More pieces of the puzzle left by my forbearers, both Jewish and German, fall into place. My first introduction to The Book Thief came when I plucked it from the bookshelf in my dad’s officeâ€"with permission, for I felt no desire to fulfill the irony of stealing a book about thievery. The tone of each book seemed to have a distinctive resonance; they quickened different parts of my being. I was raised on Roald Dahl, J.D. Salinger, C.S. Lewis, John Steinbeck, and J.R.R Tolkien. I had never been in a classroom where we were so freely allowed to ask questions. I realized that was what learning should be and that is how I want to learn. At the end of my eighth grade year we moved to Texas and as I was packing, I stumbled upon my copy of Pride and Prejudice. It was all bent and worn and it looked longingly at me as if it had been waiting for me. I picked up the book and read it in a single sitting, almost five consecutive hours enraptured by it. When the value of their work is questioned, they affirm their lack of talent; yet their social position is too valuable to give up, as reflected in the thoughts of the poet Riuchin. When a poet who has met the devil calls Riuchin a talentless artist, he accepts the claim and inwardly agrees that he does not believe in his writing.

College Essay Advisors St John’s advertises itself as the school for readers and thinkers, people who want more than a degree. I know too many people whose only hope for college is to earn a diploma, and if they can do it without learning or growing, even better. I want to spend the rest of my life learning as much I can, because getting a diploma without expanding your mind is like saving a receipt for something you don’t own. We have put up walls around ourselves and entrenched our ideas, ready for war. Satire is an ideological Trojan Horse, and, when used well, a powerful sneak attack on ignorance. A book will occupy my thoughts and conversation for a period of time but Lolita awakened a violent response- this is what I have to do, for the rest of my life. I know too many people who want to silence their opponents instead of understanding them. I want a safe space for inquiry, not a safe space for ignorance. I know too many people who are content with limited knowledge and are discontent with limited possessions. I want to expose myself to as many ideas and viewpoints as possible, and I want to be more than a consumer. Maybe not, but I loved the rules, the structure, and the big questions that surrounded organizing a government. I was skeptical that even the most appealing humanities class, AP Literature, would be anything but anticlimactic by comparison. I’d become so accustomed to reading the function-focused writings of Locke, Rousseau, Madison, Thoreau, that I found it difficult to see “literature” as anything more than mere stories. I wanted substance that I could actually do something with, and I didn’t expect to find it in AP Lit. When I think about my principles, I think about how I aspire to the humility of Helen Burns and the resolution of Jane Eyre and the stoicism of St. John. But more than anything, I would like to live my life thoughtfully. When I think back, my favorite memories and my moments of greatest esteem are not those when I was victorious, but when I was thoughtful. I treasure the philosophical debates I’ve had with friends, the snow days spent reading in bed, the essays I labored over until they were a source of pride. Merriam-Webster defines satire as “trenchant wit, irony, or sarcasm used to expose and discredit vice or folly.” Catch-22 clearly fits within this definition. However, I find this definition lacking, good satire should hold up a fun-house mirror to society to accentuate its problems and perhaps offer hope for the future. I thought about these things constantlyâ€"while brushing my teeth, doing chores, and driving to school. Unable to take this beloved course a second time, I chose my senior classes with more than a touch of melancholy. I have to analyze great literature and live in its questioning. My experience with Lolita informed my entire way of thinking. It taught me that there is no ending to a conversation, and no meaning without conversation. When I was a freshman in high school, The Colbert Report debuted. Attending a religious school in rural Missouri, most of the faculty and students were rather conservative. They weren’t stupid; they knew the joke was on them, but it was funny enough that they watched the show and read the books. It certainly wasn’t enough to convince them to abandon their political identities, but it did have them absorbing ideas that they wouldn’t have entertained for a second if those ideas hadn’t been couched in wit. With the increasing division caused by social media’s ideological bubbles, satire has become a necessary means to provoke thought and conversation outside of one’s normal exposure. Martin Amis described this experience best, in his introduction to and essay on Lolita, “Clearly, these are not a scholar’s notes, and they move towards no edifice of understanding or completion. And I am running out of clean white space.” This is what I wish to be, I do not want to pretend to that kind of edifice, but rather be met every day by surprise. It is that surprise that I can see in the community at St. John’s. I imagine life there will be four years of running out of clean white space. ACT is a mission-driven, non-profit organization dedicated to helping people achieve education and workplace success. We are trusted as a national leader in college and career readiness, providing high-quality assessments grounded in nearly 60 years of research. While millions of individuals take the ACT test each year, that’s just one aspect of our work. Any pessimist can simply expose and discredit vice and folly. Even calling something “vice or “folly” discredits it. To make a reader care, an author must place an earnest heart within their satire and at least hint that we can do better. This would place satire in the realm of speculative fiction, the genre that includes science fiction and fantasy.

The juxtaposition between the mundane life of fast food work and the overall tone, which includes jokes and melodrama, demonstrates the author's insight and unique perspective. The new burger-flipping environment challenged the writer, which shows that he's not afraid to push himself out of his comfort zone. His time watching and learning from Anuj demonstrates the candidate is eager to learn and marvels at expertise in any field. Try to share one profound message, not ten lacklustre statements. The more narrow your focus, the more concise and effective your essay will be. Each sentence should build on the last and compel the reader onward. Then, you can start translating it into a more polished form. Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community or family. I had taken the plunge and secured my very first part time job. If you’re having trouble organizing your piece, try talking it out with someone, writing it a few sentences, creating it as an infographic or even a graphic novel - whatever helps you see it. Then, try writing it in a more traditional format. That might be a good form for you if, for example, you were trying to convince a school that your summer job working on a landscaping team taught you a lot about chemistry, your chosen major. Waiting until the final paper is completed for first feedback is dangerous, especially if the key points are not hitting as well with an audience as they are in the student’s brain. Critical Review Psychology Essay - 1650 Words

Critical Review: Psychology (Article Critique Sample) Content: NameInstitutionInstructorCourseDateLesack, R., Bearss, K., Celano, M. (2014).Parentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Child Interaction Therapy and Autism Spectrum Disorder: Adaptations with a Child with Severe Developmental Delays. Clinical Practice in Pediatric Psychology, 2(1), 68-82SummaryParentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Child Interaction Therapy and Autism Spectrum Disorder: Adaptations with a Child with Severe Developmental Delays is a study that was undertaken by William G. Sharp Roseanne Lesack, Karen Bearss and Georgia Marianne Celano from Emory University School of Medicine and Marcus Autism Center, Atlanta. The aim of the study was to apply Parent -Child interaction therapy (PCIT); a training program that was developed for typically developing children that has shown great potential for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), to children with ASD, pronounced developmental delays as well as aggression, non compliance and tantrums. The caregivers at home and in community setting lack effic ient and effective support presenting a major public health need. There is also need to identify and study interventions that are effective in reducing recurrent problem behaviors of children with ASD that present safety concerns like aggression, elopement and disruption, these behaviors also interfere with the educational programming of the child.Participant: Kevin a five year boy is the main participant of the study. He was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum disorder. Clinical observations by a licensed psychologist show that he had significant language delay and no use of compensatory strategies. His vocalizations were non directed and lacked communicative intent. Kevin had elevated problem behavior as reported by the parent which included; non compliance, self- injury, aggression, tantrums and dangerous behavior. Kevin also exhibited multiple stereotypic behavior and very low instances of eye contact.Measures: In PCIT, progress is evaluated by using Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory ( ECBI; Eyberg Pincus, 1999) the parentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s report of the childà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s problem behavior. Progress was also measured through direct observation of the Parent- Child interaction during treatment sessions. The Dyadic Parentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Child Interaction Coding System, 3rd edition (DPICS; Eyberg,Nelson, Duke, Boggs, 2004) was used in assessing these interactions.Setting: The sessions were done weekly lasting forty five minutes each. Kevin and his mother participated in them. The treatment was at a specialized center for children with ASD. Sessions were conducted in a room that had a way mirror which was used to observe the parent child interactions. A microphone linked the therapy room to the observation room. Communication to Kevinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s mother was through an ear bug device.Method: The study used two intervention procedures * Child Directed Interaction. It involved repeating vocalization with the appropriate communicative intent followed by correct word(s) for the item( s) or action(s). (Example "Ahà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ you said à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"ballà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ). The parent was instructed to ignore non functional and stereotypic vocalizations. * Parent Directed InteractionsThis involved using the name of the child as a prompting cue before issuing a command. They also adopted three step prompting method to introduce target commands, that is; verbal, model and physical prompting. Gesture cues were used for all commands. * Time outTime out was introduced for a target command after three consecutive compliances to a command involving verbal and model prompting. There was a reduced sit requirement that was increased with successful sitting. The holding chair was used as a backup time out procedure. Results: At the end of the sessions, Kevinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s mother was able to successfully give direct commands. She offered praise contingent on Kevinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s compliance with demands with minimal coaching required. The time out procedure was correctly implemented. Kevinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s mother expressed confidence in using PCIT at home and community settings. Conclusion: Compared to other validated intervention for ASD, PCID offers an intervention that can be used in multiple settings given appropriated adaptations are identified and made. This approach is also economical offering an intervention that parents can implement at home and public places with relatively minimal clinical contact. Further research should be done to evaluate the best treatment elements for optimal clinical outcomes as well as to develop treatment guidelines specific to this population.Description of Participants and SettingIn this single research study the participant was well described. The age, gender and diagnosis details are clear. The participant is a five year old boy that was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder through an external evaluation. The clinical observations of the participant made by licensed psychologists are included in depth. The clini cal interview and behavioral observations were done in accordance to the diagnostic criteria specified in the American Psychiatric Association. Description of the participant is exhaustive and sufficient enough to enable someone to identify individuals with the same characteristics.Kevin was not selected for participation but was referred to the PCIT program because of his parentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s report of elevated problem behavior. Evaluation of Kevin prior to treatment showed markedly low eye contact, low levels of functional vocalizations, stereotypic behaviors and disruptive behaviors at a high rate. This study may be replicated in children who exhibit characterizes similar to those exhibited by Kevin before commencements of treatment as potential participants. The physical setting of the study is clearly included; the study took in a specialized center for children with ASD. The room were treatment was done is described as having a one way mirror used for observation of Parent -Child interaction by the psychologist. The means through which communication between the parent and psychologist took place is also mentioned. The duration of each session and the entire treatment is also specified.Dependable VariableDependent variables are divided into two based on the phases. The first phase called Child Directed Interactions (CDI) that was aimed at teaching the care giver to follow the child lead during play. The aim is to increase the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"do skillsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and minimize the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬t skillsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬. The participantà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s mother was also encouraged to perform five minutes CDI skill practice session at home. The homework completion rate were reviewed and recorded at the beginning f each session. The second phase involves Parent Directed Interactions (PDI) that was used to teach the parent how to issue direct commands. The dependable variables have been described with clarity in the study. The dependable procedure is quantifia ble. The study gives the mastery criteria for PDI as that during a five minute period the caregiver should give a direct command seventy five percent of the time and follow through with treatment procedures after issuing a command seventy five percent of the time. The measurement of the dependable variable is through the use Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory to report the childà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s problem behavior and Dyadic Parentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Child Interaction Coding System to measure the parent child interaction during sessions. These tools of measurement valid and can be replicated in a similar study. The dependent variables were consistently measured during each session over the fifteen week period that the treatment took place. The homework completion rate was also measured. The Interobserver agreement was eighty three percent which is above minimal standards. It was calculated by total agreements of parent category divided by total agreements and disagreements. The dependent variable in this case study was selected for its social significance. The "Do" Skills like Behavior descriptions, reflections, and labeled praise are encourage for the healthy development of any child. Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬t Skills like Questions, commands, and negative talk are discouraged and should be used less often by care givers. It is important for caregivers in the home and community setting to be able to effectively issue a command to their children with ASD so as to ensure fewer struggles when raising them and effectively deal with such behavior as aggression, elopement, disruption and other hazardous behavior.Independent VariableThe independent variable in this study is the Time- out Procedure...

| The Pursuit of Excellence | Abstract: Whether you are an athlete, a teacher, or a promising high achiever in another walk of life, you can achieve excellence. At a time when numbers speak, performance is equal to profit and getting through the basic minimum at work is the standard practice, does the urge to set benchmarks of quality and excellence become redundant? How many of us go through life simply trying to fulfill the basics and how many set out to achieve true excellence? Graduation Speech Math And English Essay - 1700 Words

As a student starting off their schooling career there is a heavy focus on two subjects, that being Math and English. Within my elementary school career, I excelled in math and seemed to struggle with English as I was an ESL student. I struggled with English for years, but was able to learn Math very quickly. As a Mexican- American student, my family was not able to provide as much help with English as they were with Math. Regardless of any language barrier I could have had with teachers or my own parents, math was something I could grasp. I remember by third grade year, I had mastered multiplication tables and I was extremely proud of myself. However, by the time I began middle school I was already losing some of my strength in math. Starting middle school, I was placed into all honors math programs which was something I questioned. I myself didn’t feel that I was at a level where I should be placed in honors courses but I didn’t fight it. All was well until I began m y eighth grade year, where I took Algebra. I didn’t expect much and didn’t even think that I would struggle within the course. I’m not sure if I wasn’t prepared for the course or maybe if the course was just difficult but I didn’t do as well as in prior courses. This year, I had struggled and was barely able to maintain a C within the course. By my second semester, I had considered switching out to the easier course provided by my school. However, I decided to commit and stick with my Algebra course. By theShow MoreRelatedSports and Academic Achievement1494 Words   |  6 Pagesstrategy, and time management. The organization will also benefit in terms of the operational, maintenance and infrastructural costs that will be reduced to a great extent. Maintenance and support activities associated with the database and associated operations will also become easy. WEAKNESSES The migration of database to the cloud will bring a lot many changes for the internal staff in terms of processing and operations. These changes may be difficult to manage during the initial period and may also result in a number of concerns related with employee resistance and reduced productivity. Training costs will be involved as it would be necessary to train the employees on the new changes implemented in the system There may be unavailability of the skills required to administer and perform operations on the cloud database which may require external hiring to be performed. There may also be security concerns that may come up which will require special focus from the security team (Hashizume, Rosado, Fernndez-Medina, Fernandez, 2013). Downtime may also increase due to frequent attacks and threats in case of weak security architecture. OPPORTUNITIES The organization will be able to serve better to its clients as the database operations will become faster in terms of processing and execution There will also be overall cost savings and benefits with this step and planned cost benefit analysis Once the employees will be able to acquire the required skills and adapt the pace required for the operations, there will be improvements in terms of efficiencies and productivity The organization will also be able to attain a competitive edge over the others in the market Management and administration activities will also improve leading to organized execution of database services and operations THREATS Data breaches may be common with the involvement of cloud database and cloud storage which may impact the data properties such as confidentiality, availability and integrity of the data (Jansen, 2016).
